As someone who resolves people’s tax problems for a living, my best advice for small businesses is: Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish when it comes to taking care of the “nitty gritty” finances, especially when dealing with the IRS. For example, don’t use DIY tax prep tools unless you have straight W-2s. And you need to hire a good bookkeeper that knows double entry accounting (debits and credits). Don’t procrastinate – you need to get someone on board right away. Don’t wait too long, before you know it you will be up to your nostrils in issues.
