Ms. Lizzie Stark, Founder of Fringe Magazine Inc.
Company Name
Fringe Magazine Inc.
What The Business Does
Fringe is a quarterly online literary journal that publishes political and experimental literature by emerging and established writers.
Started
June 2005
Startup Cost
$300
Favorite food
Steamed artichokes. Yum!
Cost of a Great Night Out
$30, tops. Enough for a few beers and maybe a movie.
Favorite Music
Belle & Sebastian, the Magnetic Fields and the Smiths
Fly, Drive, Bike or Walk
None of the above! Public transportation, because it's fast and green.
Proudest Accomplishment
Definitely loading the first issue of Fringe. When we finally finished that first issue, we lived up to the expectations we set for ourselves, and that felt wonderful.
Passion
Writing and literature and I'm living them. As the editor of Fringe, I'm helping other people live their literary dream, by publishing folks that are at the beginning of their careers and publishing genres that other literary magazines don't. Running Fringe and seeing it grow are really fun, and my responsibilities as an editor tie in nicely with my plans as a journalist and fiction writer.
Greatest lesson
Patience and moxie count more than money does.
Starting up a new venture isn't fast or easy. Patience helps you improve your product until it's really ready to go. You have to have the moxie to ask the tough questions of yourself and your staff, and the audacity to believe that you can succeed.
How Are You a TPE?
I'm a MacGuyver, or perhaps more of a Xena of literary magazines. Give me three sheets of toilet paper, a straw and a paperclip, and somehow I'll whip them into a Fringe feature.
