GUEST POST – 'Free Advertising. That's Right. FREE!' by Chase Barfield

Published by Mike Michalowicz (Google+)

Chase BarfieldFirst, let me qualify the title. Free, for the purposes of this article, carries the definition of no monetary compensation. As we know: time is money so time is never free. With that disclaimer out of the way, let's proceed onto the current topic of how to get free advertising for your business.

You can have the most innovative product in the world or the highest quality service conceived. None of that matters if no one knows about it. Sure, you can pay for advertising. But there are truly effective ways to advertise with little to no capital outlay. There are many mediums on which you can advertise: newspaper, TV, radio, internet, yellow pages, etc. Some mediums are easier to achieve free advertising than others. We will cover the easier ones to achieve maximum benefit with no cost.

  • Visit your local newspaper and ask if they have a community update section (title may vary). Most local newspapers have a section where they post new businesses opening, achievements by local business people and/or their employees, and special business occurrences. If you are preparing to start a new business, write up a brief paragraph with your company's pertinent information and submit it to the newspaper. A week before you open, write a paragraph notifying the newspaper of your grand opening. After you open, write another paragraph stating that you are now open. Repeat this step every time something new happens: hire someone new, you or an employee get an industry certification, you launch a new service, etc. Don't think you are submitting too much. The newspaper will let you know. They will be your barometer. I have done this for years in multiple cities without any issues.
  • Develop a referral system for your company. Whatever your product or service, there is a way to create an incentified referral system. Clients acquired through a referral of one of your current clients are more likely to spend higher dollar amounts, more frequently, and be less price sensitive. That is why many of the largest companies in the world develop referral systems. Reward your existing client and make a special offer to the new client. Develop tangible referral material to help your clients help your company.
  • Volunteer your time. Volunteer with local civic groups, schools, and charities. Many entrepreneurs believe that the more you give the more you will receive. When you volunteer you are able to meet people and get to know them on a personal level. You have the opportunity to acquire new clients while helping your local community, charity, or school. These clients tend to be less price sensitive due to the perception of your philanthropic time giving. They know you personally do things for free and this lessens any thought of greed or over pricing.
  • List your company online.
  1. Visit sites like Merchant Circle, Google Maps, Yahoo Local, and the Microsoft Local Listing Center and list your business. Merchant circle allows you to create online coupons to offer your clients. All the sites I listed will list your company's pertinent information along with a map of your physical location.
  2. If you own your own website, submit your domain name to the main search engines (Google, Yahoo, & Live Search) every month and make sure your website has targeted meta tags. Meta tags are descriptive words located "under the hood" of your website. Some refer to them as "keywords."
  3. In addition to your standard website architecture, implement a blog. WordPress is flexible and free. Blogs work and your reading of this article is proof. Every time you write a post, you have the opportunity to submit new targeted meta tags which will exponentially increase your virtual footprint. Make sure you have a good comment tracking system. It will help with demographic data collection. I suggest IntenseDebate, it is feature packed and free. In conjunction with your blog, comment on blogs you read. Each blog has a comment system that allows you to leave your name and website. Leave quality comments and eventually you will catch other people's attention and have the ability to convert them from readers into clients.
  4. Lastly, create company profiles on MySpace, Facebook, and LinkedIn at the very minimum. Invite all family, friends, and colleagues to join.

Combine and cross promote with the various tactics I have listed. Promote your referral system through your Facebook profile. Tell the newspaper your company really believes in a cause and has started volunteering to help that cause. Everything I have listed takes time, effort, and patience to acquire results. But once you employ these methods and become adept at cross promotion across multiple tactics, the processes will seem second nature and inversely less time consuming to keep the processes maintained. Deploy these strategies and help your cash flow. You'll earn more and be able to keep more of your increased revenues.

    Chase,

If you asked me about the power of Facebook (your final point) only 6 months ago, I would have believed it was insignificant. But now I have seen the light. There is gold in them thar hills!

If you don’t have a Facebook and/or MySpace and/or LinkedIn presense… and are regularly updating it, you are missing out. Big time.

    Chase,

    This is an awesome post!

As someone who loves marketing, I have to say you hit it right on the head.

What kinds of creative things have you done for your business’s to help you get free advertising?

I would love to foster a discussion about this in the comments!

    Scott,
I have actually successfully deployed every single concept I wrote about. Here’s one for you that I did not delve into and it works well in smaller towns. If you are in a metropolitan area, it may be worth the drive to visit suburbia. If you are an entrepreneur (assumption since you are reading this blog) then you are a source of knowledge and experience in your field. Visit a local radio station and offer to do weekly segments of “Ask The [enter field of expertise here].” By doing this, you have a weekly forum of free advertising. I have learned that if you offer to give value first, you are better received. Offer to do it for the radio station free of charge on their schedule. Make sure to have friends and family call in to ask you worthwhile questions that are valuable to the populous. This will allow a few things. One, everyone listening will immediately see credibility (even if it was rehearsed). Two, the radio station will see value due to call volume. Three, it will allow you to become comfortable with the format without the fear of bumbling your first few times. It will make answering unscripted questions easier because of your familiarity with the radio station’s platform and SOP (standard operating procedure). Friends and family will most likely only be needed for one or two times until the buzz catches on. Cross promote on the social media venues and even go to the newspaper with a Business Bulletin Update about your company on the radio. As your popularity grows, you will get a better time slot and you can negotiate some gratis advertising from the radio station because of your assistance in increasing their ratings. I hope this sparked some ideas for you.

    Chase,

Good job with your article. To piggyback on your first suggestion…I understand what you mean about notifying your community section. That’s a good way to keep your name out there for free. When I was starting out I couldn’t afford to advertise in the newspaper (actually advertise period, lol) so I started submitting freelance articles, similar to the one you wrote, to my local newspaper. It doesn’t have the reach of the internet persay but it keeps your name out in your community. There is real money to be made in the offline world as well…imagine that ;-) As a result not only did I get paid a nominal fee, I got branded as their expert in my respective field. It definitely trumped any ad that I would ever pay for.

As for the volunteering- I do it religiously. I volunteer usually 5-10 hours per week, year round. I do everything from one day events to industry trade shows that I am too cheap to buy a ticket too, lol, to fundraisers that take 8-9 mos to plan with an all volunteer staff. I have done everything ranging from supporting my favorite causes to nights of 100 elvises…such a blast. And many things I have done for several years. Beyond consistently putting the good energy out there and networking with the awesome people you meet, you take away amazing skills that you never knew you had. Funny how you quickly you figure out all your hidden talents as well as everybody elses when you have to come up with something quick, fast in a hurry…with no money ;-)

    Shonika,
First I would like to thank you for your kind words. As to your freelance idea, that is fantastic. I have been reading Robert Shemin’s blog and it suggested freelance writing as well. I have been evaluating elance, getafreelancer, ifreelance, and guru. If you have any experience with these sites, please contact me about it (go to my blog and submit via “contact” page and I will send my personal email. But sending in freelance articles to the local paper is an awesome idea that I will have to try. Word of advice to others reading – letters to the editor won’t normally print company specific names because of neutrality.

All entrepreneurs seem to have the volunteering gene. My wife and I actually concentrate more on who we can help than what to do with the riches to come. You seem to be doing the volunteer thing right. I am a big proponent of helping others first. Somehow, someway I always get rewarded (whether that was my intention or not). As you stated, “putting the good energy out there” is always an excellent idea to have good things return.

As I offered to Mike and Scott, I will happily link exchange with you and I will be adding RenegadeCEOs to my reader.
