Want To Dominate An Industry? Write A Book

Christmas morning could have been your day. All those eager gift getters could have seen your face as they drooled over your new amazing book. Your book! Do you hear me?!??! YOUR BOOK. They could have spent the evening drinking eggnog and reading your wisdom. But alas, you still haven’t written your book. Another year down the tubes.

Do you want to dominate your industry? From chimney cleaning, to car racing, to computer programming, the industry authorities ALWAYS have a book. It is a right, or should I say “a write” of passage.

If you want to dominate your industry the easiest starting points is writing your own book, about the industry of course. When you put something in writing, you instantly become more believable, more influential and more authoritative. I don’t know why. After all, the words you write will be nearly identical to what you say. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that? You WILL be talking a lot (think public speaking), if you write a successful book.

Instead of sharing a cornucopia of tips, let me share the one most important part to getting your new book published. Start writing, keep writing and never stop. Just write, write and write some more. At a certain point it will flow, and the next steps will become much more obvious. Better yet, if you are an entrepreneur, give me a call when you get to that next step.

Almost there with my first “baby,” looking at about Feb 7th to be self published. Woo Hoo!! Now I know what feelings women go through at the “8th month and second week” of their pregnancy. Ready to give “birth” to this thing. LOL.

@Kevin – send me your book when it is ready, brother. I will show it off on an upcoming episode of On A Roll!!!! Congrats on the new “baby”, by the way.

Yes, Mike, as a writer I can confirm that this ONE piece advice IS the most valuable. After all, an athlete or a musician or a gardener–every person with a talent–MUST keep at it or it will never become easy.

Do you think Lance Armstrong stops his bicycling practice? Sure it’s easy for him…because he never stops using that skill or talent.

    Amen, Mike. Amen!

Mike – do you think ebooks carry a similar prestige? They are definitely cheaper to produce and easier to sell.

    • http://www.ToiletPaperEntrepreneur.com Mike Michalowicz

@Avrum – I don’t think they do, unfortunately. There is something special almost nostalgic about holding a hard cover book. I suggest lulu.com (as a starting point) for getting a low run series of printed books. If you go large quantity hard cover look into a traditional printer.

For self publishing also consider createspace.com (they used to be booksurge.com. They are a division of Amazon so getting your book listed on Amazon becomes a piece of cake. If you need help editing the manuscript consider posting a job on Elance.

Thanks for the great tip Tracy! I dare say that CreateSpace.com also allows for audio books. So if anyone is considering an audio book download, that may also be the source.

    Mike,
I completely agree. Your readers might want to check out @DonnaKozik who offers a weekend session called “Write a Book in a Weekend”. I haven’t been able to take advantage of it yet, but it’s on my to-do-list for 2010.

This is awesome and you just motivated me even more! I’ve started my book as well and my goal is November 2010, in time for the stocking stuffing :)

    Thanks!

@Susan – out of all people…. YOU MUST write a book.

Great advice Mike – I’ve written and market 12 different ebooks, have sold through Amazon Advantage and LightningSource physical copies of 3 of them and operate paid membership sites, coaching programs and delivery information in other formats such as DVD’s and teleseminars.

As you mention, writing a book is a terrific way to build your personal brand, imcrease (or create) a reputation for yourself.

It should be part of a bigger plan – either to promote back end products, services or career plans OR to serve as the starting point for a larger information publishing business where your book funnels customers into higher-end programs such as membership sites, video training programs, seminars, home study courses, etc…

You can always start out with an ebook – written in MS Word, converted to PDF – market it online from your own website, through ebook marketplaces like Clickbank and then have it printed using POD providers that also are well linked to retail listings such as Lightningsource or as you mention – Lulu.

I too urge everyone to position themselves by writing a book.
