One of the most useful tips I could give anyone starting his/her own business is to start by finding a niche. The niche should be related to your business and should be a small outlet to get you started. Hopefully those in the niche will either provide you with resources to get new clients or will be your first set of clients themselves. Targeting one niche allows you to set and focus on your goals. Without a clear target group, it is very challenging to succeed and grow. Remember, satisfied clients will give the BEST referrals.
For my business, Secretary in Israel LLC, the premier virtual assistant placement organization, I found my niche in a group of Rabbis. As a virtual assistant placement organization that outsources to Israel we needed to target a set of clients— a group that could benefit from our organization as well as provide many referrals. Chabad Rabbis seemed like the perfect choice. They often work on college campuses or in small towns and do not employ a full time assistant. However, they often felt overwhelmed by trying to complete all of the administrative work themselves while still having time to get out of their office. By using our services, they saved TONS of time. As satisfied customers of our service they networked within their group of Rabbis and referred all of their friends to us. We provided them with an invaluable service and they did us a tremendous favor by sending us more clients. Once the niche flourished and we had our name established, we were able to easily expand to many other small business owners in all fields such as lawyers, coaches, psychologists, start-ups, etc.
Remember, start small to get large. You need to build your business by focusing on your goals and by finding a niche to help you achieve them. The niche will provide you with the security you need to succeed and help you outreach your services further. Then, just watch your business grow!
