Guest Post- Are You A Garbage Truck? By Sarah Radford

I recently discovered the Law of the Garbage Truck and I think that it parallels Entrpreneurship.

David Pollay, said that "If you want to be happy and if you want to be successful, you HAVE to follow the Law of the Garbage Truck."

Here's what he said:

***

The Law of the Garbage Truck by David Pollay

"One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really friendly.

So I asked, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!" This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call "The Law of the Garbage Truck."

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so..... "Love the people who treat you right. Forgive the ones who don't."

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!"

After reading this, I got to thinking about how this parallels being an Entrepreneur. I have had my business, Chic Gems, etc. Jewelry, for about 5 years now. I cannot count how many people have given me their "2 cents" that I would have happily let them keep.

I have been told "You don't have enough money to do this" or "You don't have enough experience to do this" or "How can you compete with Tiffany's" or "Why do you want to work that hard", and the list goes ON...

Basically, my thought is that life is not easy and business is not easy. But by keeping a positive attitude and persevering you can truly do anything you want in this world.

I always think of Thomas Edison and all of his failed experiments...what if he had given up and not invented the light bulb? We would be living in a very DARK world. I think the spirit of hope is important because without, what do we have?

My advice:
1. Be positive, have a plan, surround yourself with successful people.
2. Don't listen to negative people and do not dump negative energy on others.
3. Don't give up on your dreams.
4. Don't overly focus on your competitors, follow your passions and always do your best.
5. Stay focused on your goals; use your goals as your roadmap to success.

@Sarah – Here’s a comment…. YOU RULE! Great article. How we deal with emotions are a huge part of success, actually it is nearly the exclusive determinant of success.

After posting a quick motivational article on my own blog today I came across this. Our minds were somehow synced here. The gist, you have to be confident and do what you want to do. Negative emotions will strangle you if you let them. Just do it.

    Great post.

Great thoughts, Sarah… very inspirational! People tend to give up too quickly, act out in anger, etc. You have to be stronger to just keep going!

Preach on, sista. And thanks for the very positive pick-me-up tale this morning. Dealing with some people who are definitely garbage trucks and seeing this perspective made me realize that I can choose to be one as well or I can dump the negativity and let the frustrated ones do their own thing.

I can just blow all my steam off on my blog later, after all, right?! Thanks Sarah!

..After reading this article..I think that I’m a garbage truck sometimes! Very inspirational and these words are something to remember at all times! Thanks Sarah!

This stuff is pretty inspiring. I do not mean to generalize, but in a way I will. Negative people do not know what they want in life and will waste your time. Sometimes actual negative people around are the ones you are emotionally attached too. It is hard to let go, but it is well worth it. This article is full of wisdom and it made my day!

Right on Sarah! I remember the first Interior Designer I approached for an informational interview before starting my business. She was so negative about my getting into the business and told me I couldn’t make any money — I was very surprised by her attitude. I’ve been in business 3.5 yrs now, and I agree it’s all about a positive attitude, belief in yourself, hard work, and THE best way to get all that is by surrounding yourself with others who also, “believe.” You are an inspiration!

This is a great analogy. I’m sure many of us can apply this situation to our own situations like this that we come across. Any fool can criticize, condemn or complain, and most fools do, but it takes compassion and self control to be understanding and forgiving.

Gives you a new perspective on Garbage Trucks-eh? I laugh when I see them now… “Dump the garbage in your life and live a great life!”

  • Kelly

That is so true! This is a great article and just the boost I was needing today :) Thank you for helping me remember that it is always better to just smile and then forget about it!

  • Mary

    Tis true!
and note also Life’s Little Instructions said-
“Remember, to win is simple; take just one more step when all the others have quit.”
    Keep going!

Go Sarah. Thanks for sharing this with us! It is so relevant and necessary. I say this over and over in my vlogs and blogs there are so many people who aren’t doing their own personal work and then want to blame everyone else for their misery.

    Thanks for this reminder.

“Life is not easy and business is not easy” – You are exactly right! It’s competitive. It’s exhausting. It’s challenging. And yet it’s what you love – So happy you are doing what makes you happy!

Right on sista! Spoken like a true entrepreneur! Don’t let them bring you down and if you want my “2 cents,” I say that anything is possible! If you can dream it, and feel it…you can achieve it:-)! Hope to see you soon!

Yep, true dat. The successful and accomplished people of the world are compassionate but they do not let the distractions and drama of everyone and everything in their environment to become their own.
