Swamped With Tons Of Crappy Resumes? Never Again!

Published by Mike Michalowicz (Google+)

It is the sign of the times; lots of people looking for jobs. Some great job seekers, some good, and some really crappy ones. But the common theme seems to be desperation. When you are out of a job for a while, people will apply for any job, not necessarily the appropriate job.

For entrepreneurs like you this is a big problem. Run one ad on Craig's list and you are likely to get hundreds of responses, mostly crap. Good luck finding the good ones.

Don't fret my fellow TPE, I have good news (in the form of a little trick). This technique will help you filter out the serious folks from the resume bombardiers. Here is what you need to do:

1.  Run a long ad, detailing the job.

2. In the lower 3rd of the ad embed a required line for the applications cover letter. For example have them say "I read your ad and am including this line, because you required it."

3. When receiving the email responses use your email system to filter out anyone without cover letters, and anyone with a cover letter that does not include the embedded line.

4. Enjoy reviewing the 5 resumes that matter, and throw the rest in the electronic junk pile!

Want to learn more about my strategy? Check out the article I wrote for The Wall Street Journal that details the process:Resume Overload

It is continuously interesting to me how closely reading, listening, then responding with relevance are correlated.

I’m thinking residing within just these three elements resides much of the explanation around who may become unexpectedly unemployed repeatedly.

Mike, I find it remarkable how little content you needed to express this quite big idea. It could “spark” a whole new approach to resume-ing.

@Sherry – If you haven’t yet… try it out. It works shockingly well.
