Wow lots of great tips here for someone (like me) who’s pretty new to hiring employees, or contractors.

I see a common thread of checking the attitude and watching for comments about past work. Great tip as a positive attitude really isn’t something you can teach someone.

One thing I would have to disagree with (at least for my own situation) is worrying about how people dress. That came up a few times and it seems to me that that’s pretty ‘old-school’ with the way business now can be run from any bedroom or basement with people wearing whatever they’re most comfortable in. I guess it depends on the company, though, and the people who run it. I know I’ll never not hire someone because they don’t dress in the proper shoes or dress-suit.

Love all the ideas these posts have given me and there’s a whole lot of combined wisdom here, thanks for all who contributed!

Thanks for sharing such a huge and comprehensive list containing all the aspects of hiring an employee of needs. It’s very useful stuff for HR, who need to follow all the minorities while hiring a reliable candidate.
