Making Your Website Mobile

Facebook has over 100 million users accessing its website from mobile phones (source). Morgan Stanley released a report saying that more users will be accessing the Internet via mobile devices than desktop PCs within 5 years (source). Eric Schmidt, Google's CEO, said they're putting mobile first (source). What does all of this mean? It means the consumer is going mobile and you need to embrace this opportunity.

There are a few ways to "go mobile." The equivalent of an e-mail list to send out e-mails to your customers is a text messaging list. Instead of sending out an e-mail blast to the inbox of your customers, you would send a message to their phone in the form of a text message. The open rates on text messages are very high compared to e-mail.

Another way to take advantage of the mobile opportunity is to make your website mobile-friendly. Imagine the on-the-go user who is looking for a local restaurant while in the car. They come across two restaurants: one with a great looking mobile website, and another with a Flash-based website. The Flash-based website doesn't work on the iPhone, and the mobile website with all the menus online and RSVP capabilities works fantastic. Who will the consumer choose? Scrolling around to navigate a website, pinching to zoom, and trying to figure out a navigation menu that was designed for a 17" screen is tolerable right now, but it's a pain point. If you take a look at http://ToiletPaperEntrepreneur.com on your web-enabled phone, you should get the mobile website. Same with http://BusinessBeware.Biz .

Matthew — I wanted to add that in addition to text-blasts to a list of your current customers, text message marketing can also be used to target prospective customers. By placing a keyword in the window of your store, in a print ad, or by mentioning it at the end of a radio ad, people can quickly and easily text for a link to your mobile web site.

We specialize in text message marketing and mobile web pages for small businesses. Check out my link….
