I work for a PEO (Professional Employer Organization). During times of economic struggle, we experience large growth because business owners are looking for ways to cut costs. By using a PEO you typically don't have to put a deposit down for work comp and you "pay as you go" so no expensive surprises at renewal. You also inherit staff to help with all of the non- income generating tasks necessary to run a business. Of course there is a fee for the service, but generally the savings are greater than the fee and you free up time your time to perform income generating tasks!

@Frank - interesting point with the cell phones. But since they are prepaid, do people go over the limit? Or do they ever run out of time?

I am a big proponent of going green, it has saved my business on bills every month and there is also a lot of tex incentives available for going green. Also something we did that saves us money monthly was switching the company cell phone from a contract to prepaid. We all have straight talk now, which gives us unlimited everything for 45 a month, cutting the bill in half for each phone we had. But as you said the bottom is productivity and as any employeer your always trying to increase productivity, its the eternal search.

Mike. Not just lost productivity but cost of absenteeism, reputation of company, staff retention and more.
On an economic basis a pain prevention project is worth funding when its value to the enterprise is worth more than the costs.
I can help the office workers with positiveposture.net

@Jane - I see what you are saying. Lost productivity clearly is a big money trap.

You should think about health and safety with regard to cost cutting.
And not just heavy industry. Office workers really suffer from back, neck pain etc.
The real problem here is a lack of knowledge - what is good posture, am I physically fit to do my work, and how can I make myself better equiped to do the job?
With these issues there is a loss in productivity, absenteeism, and their associated costs.
