Confessions Of A Broadcasting Master: Marketing Tips

You have got a great show and now you got to get the word out right?

Marketing your show will take a lot of work, but the good thing is that if you have a good show, word of mouth will do the rest once you have done the work.

The most important thing for you to work on is your content and show format. I have said in previous blogs to not try and be like anyone else. If you do “you”, you will be fine. Trying to appeal to the masses will never get you a loyal niche following.

“I don’t know the formula for success, but the formula for failure is trying to please everyone.” -Bill Cosby

Once I got that through my thick skull, my ratings sky rocketed.

Marketing your show is all about putting it in front of the people that want to hear what you have to say. If you are starting at square 0 then what you will want to do is participate in blogs and forums of other shows that you find interesting. These shows should not be directly related to your show topics, but rather complementary.

For instance if your show is about dog grooming, you will want to participate in a show that talks about dog training.

Get it?

In your posts, you can always put a link to your website, blog talk radio page, or iTunes link.

Being a TPE you should be well aware already of how to use the services like twitter, facebook, linkedin, etc. These services will enable you to have a successful show launch if you have been working them correctly.

During the process of creating your show you will want to make some decisions on the delivery platform that you will want to use. There are many out there. One of the main decisions you will need to make is whether or not you want to do a live show or a podcast. This decision will help you chose your platform.

My personal suggestion is to start off with a podcast and use a service like iTunes along with feedburner to promote your show. I know, I know, I already hear you guys saying, “But I want a live show”.

The reason for doing a podcast is to generate interest in your show and build an audience that will want to participate in a live show. Trust me, if you do a live call in show on one of the free services like blog talk radio or talk shoe, and no one tunes in for your first show, you will have egg on your face. Build your audience with social media and a podcast first. I have lots of free information on show format and other important things in my free book. Download it at www.theinternetbroadcaster.com

Do you want to know my number one secret? I know you do. Well here it is. Create your own social networking site like on www.ning.com or www.collectivex.com. When you do this and use your facebook account, twitter account, etc to draw people to your site it makes it that much easier to invite people to your show.

The most important thing about this is controlling your content. If you use facebook or twitter only, you have no real control of your product and how it is dispersed. Having your own social media site is going to be a must for you to really garner a niche audience that really wants to hear what you have to say. Ultimately you want to market mostly from your own site to the members that you have there and use other social sites as a funnel to you.

Next time I want to talk to you guys about your presentation, your sound, your product.
