68 Ways How To Stand Out From The Crowd

Are you ready to stand out from the crowd?  Do you want to be different,  I mean really different, from the competition?  Really? Then read these 68 a tips contributed by the TPE community and do at least one.  You will leap frog forward!

1. Honesty Is The Best Policy

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: It may seem obvious, but being honest with clients is essential and ethical. They may not like what you say, but if it’s the truth and based on facts, a good client will recognize the long-term benefit. If your honesty and solid counsel saves them money, time, crisis or a harmed image, then it’s well worth it. If a client doesn’t want honesty and doesn’t listen, fire ‘em!

2. Have A “unique Theme”!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: One thing that can set you aside from your competitors is having a “unique
theme” for your business. For example, “The Toilet Paper Entreprenuer”, I
thought this was a very unique theme. Your theme would be used to promote
and market your business. Don’t be afraid to think out the box.

3. Put Play On Your Calendar

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Schedule time to “play” – actually put it in your calendar. Whether it’s 15 minutes once a day or one hour a week, it’s important to stay centered in the things that makes us happy. And if your play is related at all to your work, that’s even better. A company culture is important. It becomes the backbone of an organization. For me, putting my little dog in my bicycle’s basket and riding down to the beach every evening for 30 minutes helps me work more effectively and teaches my people I value them because I value myself.

Thanks To: Diana Taylor of Pug At The Beach

4. Go “deeper” – Become Your Customer’s Customer

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Everyone knows good business is all about relationships. And supporting your client’s business is one of the best ways to build trust and strengthen the relationship. Next time you find yourself needing a cleaner, a copy writer, office furniture, printer cartridges or web development team, make a concerted effort to approach your customers that work in those fields to do the job. Spend some time talking to your customers and make note of what you find out. Any time you invest in your customer, it further deepens your relationship and will lead, without a doubt, to future customer referrals and win-win outcomes.

5. Try A Self-administered Compliance!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: One technique I’d recommend is a “self-administered compliance, (SAC).” A lot of business must comply with Government and industry compliances in order to carry out their businesses. What SAC entails is to determine what compliance issue they should embrace. It could be a green initiative, organic, safety whatever is relevant and would resonate with their audience. Then they would develop a process that they would have facilitate within their organization and could be validated periodically to maintain a reality. Next they would design a logo to represent that compliance and market themselves as a leader in their industry touting this compliance standard. Since it is their own, the competition can’t arm themselves with it.rnrnThe SAC differentiates them. Their audience would be encouraged to look for the SAC logo as a sign of a green, organic or whatever assurance. Their websites would further explain what their SAC stands for. The SAC becomes a good news story.

6. Donate Your Product Or Service

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: A spectacular way to stand out in your field and serve one’s community while receiving valuable p.r. is to donate a product or service representative of your business to a local charity’s silent auction fundraiser. Great free press for you, great service to your community ~ symbiotic/win-win!

Thanks To: Felicia Morgenstern of Studio Segundo

7. Create Your Own Space

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Conduct an honest competitive analysis of primary and secondary competitors (time and convenience are often “competitors”). We find most new businesses believe they don’t really have primary competitors, every business does, then brainstorm, brainstorm, what can your business provide differently at a value, “value innovation” that allows it to not compete head-to-head, to create a niche, its own space. It takes creativity and a true entrepreneur spirit – but if a company is attempting to compete head-to-head in this economy, it’s not going to survive or be profitable.

8. Be Different! Not The Same.

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Before I opened my retail store I visited any competition within 50 miles and looked for things that I could do different than they do, not the same. When I did this, I was surprised at how much all the stores were doing things the same and how many didn’t know about their competition. I also sent away for the same product (pillowcases) from web sites to see how I can make my pillowcases different. I then made a flier up telling of all the services I provide that are different from my competition and pass that out at shows I do and in my store. I have received comments from many customers on how my store and products are different and better than others. So it has paid off.

Thanks To: Lesley Rackowski of Pillowcasegram & Other Things, LLC

9. You Are The Standout

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: I have found being myself is the best selling point for my consulting business. When you hire Talisman Associates you get me. Bigger firms have rainmakers that sell the business but turn the work over to less experienced staff. The high touch, hands-on experience of becoming a member of the staff as a consultant is not something you find with a company v. an entrepreneur.

I think successful entrepreneurs bring a larger tolerance for risk, using best practice over theory and a willingness to always learn and collaborate with others.

Thanks To: Barbara Talisman of Talisman Associates, Inc

10. Twitter Your Way To Success

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Twiiter is a great way to stand out from your competition. You just have to work at it each day – consistancy is the key. Try using the search function to see who is tweeting about what you have to offer. Then send that person a direct messsage. Also try using twellow and twellowhood to see who is on twitter in your area.

Thanks To: Patricia M. Davis of Patricia M. Davis Attorney at Law

11. Be Likeable! Personality Counts!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Simple! Hire people with great personalities!

People do business with people they like (!)– make sure that you and your employees are
really “likeable” people!!!

Thanks To: Susan Howington of Power Connections Inc

12. It’s Not All About You

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Having a quality product or service and great customer service is just the ticket to play the business game these days. That is expected. To stand out from the competition you must go farther than what is expected.

The best advice for entrepreneurs is to be a connector. Get to know your clients, prospects, vendors, friends, etc… and really understand what makes them successful in their career. Then connect the dots. Introduce people to each other when there is a legitimate reason for them to be connected. While there is no direct “pay off” for you, you will show the people in your network that you care about their success, not just your own. There are lots of self-focused people in the business world… so you stand out when you are looking to help others.

Thanks To: Thom Singer of Author / Professional Speaker

13. Be The Expert & Standout!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Become the expert, by writing articles on sites such as EZineArticles.com, SelfGrowth.com, Examiner.com and more. With a website to drive the traffic to from the articles it puts you up front as the expert and you stand out. Write on topic and offer tips/advice. Make them want more of YOU!

Thanks To: Robin Hardy of MMPA

14. Putting That Little Extra In Extraordinary

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: To stand out today you need to offer a packaged service. Businesses willing to take the extra step will bring in more customers and keep them. For example if you are a dog walker, add a grooming service; Restaurants can add live shows during special dinners; or a sales person can take extra time to hand write notes to a client and make sure that anything sold is totally up to the buyers expectation. The point is to make whatever it is you are doing more convenient.

Thanks To: Danny Godfrey of BRANDED SOLUTIONS

15. Be Authentic

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Be real, be genuine. You are your company’s most valuable and most distinctive asset. Let people see who you are. The truth is that people do business with people they like, quality and service are important but secondary.

Thanks To: Lawrence Klimecki of Studio Rampant

16. Think Platform And Movement!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Become bigger than you product or service by developing a platform and becoming a movement!

Thanks To: Stacey Kannenberg of Cedar Valley Publishing

17. Reach Out To Everyone – Then You Will Stand Out!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Create workshops or classes that include everyone, not just your client company but the individual worker as well. For example, social media workshops are a great way to address both the company and individual needs. Additionally, since so many employees are being laid off, they are interested in skills that are transferable to their next job – such as PowerPoint, Excel, etc. Basically, you have to take more of a business-to-consumer focus and not just a business-to-business focus.

Thanks To: Sandi Webster of Consultants 2 Go®

18. Word Of Honor

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Frequently the most seemingly basic tips are the most effective, especially when companies that actually live into commitments are a dying breed.

“Word of Honor”

Terribly simple, deadly effective, challenging to implement, guaranteed to stand out in the business sea of sameness:

Commit that you and ALL of your employees will
1. do what they say they are going to do
2. when they say they are going to do it

It’s a 2 part formula and both pieces have to be in place.

In a world where almost no company delivers as promised, when promised this ALWAYS gets noticed.

Thanks To: Rob Shore of shorespeak

19. Draw A Map To The Competition

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: I draw maps to the competition. We are located near a number of hotels and advertise in publications that are found in the rooms. I act as a mini concierge and will draw maps to other galleries and businesses that the customer expressed interest in. I want them to have a great time on their visit and remember us when they return. It works! We have customers who make a point of visiting us whenever business or pleasure brings them to Dallas.

Thanks To: Sandra Outland of Kittrell/Riffkind Art Glass

20. It’s In Your Dna

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Standing out in a crowd is more important than ever in a bad economic environment. One way to standout and garner good will in your community is to host a community event. We recently hosted a free child safety event that was endorsed by John Walsh and the program provides Parents with the Vital Tools Recommended by the FBI & Department of Justice. We had a tremendous turnout for this event by the community and we also received television and print coverage leading up to and during the event.

Thanks To: Rob Totaro of Potratz Advertising

21. Anticipate Early And Often!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Anticipate your customer’s need – before your customer knows the need exists.

Examples:
Your florist offers to update indoor and outdoor plants before you know you need a seasonal update.

Your salon calls to schedule a hair appointment – the day before you realize you need it.

Thanks To: Brenda Haines of Blue Door Consulting

22. A Picture Is Worth A Thousand ?? Words? Dollars? Wealth!!!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: To truly standout – Do the unexpected.

Take a photo of your customer with his purchase and send a card using a program like SendOutCards.com
Put their photo up on the wall labeled Greatest Customers in the World
Have a drawing to select the Customer of the week, put on your wall, your website, send out a press release, Give them a reward (free dinner, massage, something)

To standout, bring your customer into your organization. Make them feel the value they bring to you. Recognize them.

Thanks To: Scott Lovingood of The Wealth Squad Inc

23. Honesty

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: The best way to stand out from the competition and to build consumer trust is to stay honest.

Don’t use deceptive marketing or exaggerations, don’t use every legal loophole you can find that allows you to bend the truth here and there; just stick to the truth.

It may take longer for consumers to recognize ethical business behavior, but when they do, they’ll be loyal to you.

Thanks To: Heidi Junger of Onesta Organics

24. If You Speak, They Will Come…

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Get into the community and speak to groups, organizations, and associations. Give great advice your audience can use, and BRIEFLY mention your business. If you have a powerful and helpful message that is delivered effectively, you will create a roomful of advocates that will tell others about you and your business. Public speaking is free advertising that instantly builds relationships and drives new business. (Tip within the tip: don’t create a speech that is an hour-long infomercial. You must give useful advice.)

Thanks To: Shari’ Alexander of Presenting Matters, LLC

25. Be A News Watchdog For Your Client

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: My clients really appreciate it when I share something newsworthy that’s happening in their industry which I feel may be of benefit for them. It’s just an extra courtesy to let them know that as a small business owner myself, either I’ve seen an article in the print media or even something online. They know that I’m their eyes and ears and helping to educate them further. Also a good way just to stay in touch!

Thanks To: Janet O’Connor of O’Connor Creative

26. Create An Unforgettable Experience

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Do something so wild or unexpected or unique that you create an unforgettable experience for your customers.

For example: a mechanic can throw in a FREE oil change when a customer has a repair. The customer isn’t happy up front b/c they hate paying $500 for a new wheel bearing…but they will be ecstatic when they receive an oil change for free!

Thanks To: Weston Lyon of Weston Lyon’s Secret Society

27. No One Can Copy You

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: You must have something about you that makes you unique after all there are no carbon copies of you. Take advantage of that special feature about you. We know you have it!

Thanks To: Meryl K Evans of meryl.net

28. Be The Go To Expert

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Position yourself as the “Go to Expert” and develop trust over time by providing up to date accurate information in your field. I achieve this by aggressively maintaining a weekly and monthly e-mail campaign to my data base. My regular and continual e-mails always provide information that adds value that is useful to my target group…they are not “salesy”. I NEVER add a name to my distribution list without asking first and giving the client/lead a clear idea of what to expect.

This system has allowed me to develop and maintain a loyal client base that views me as the go to professional for mortgage related issues. It also has generated many new clients through referrals.

Thanks To: Mike Premny of Icon Capital Group, Inc

29. Be Who You Really Are

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Rather than ‘blending in,’ be who you really are. If you are wacky, be wacky. If you are super smart, be super smart. If you are off-the-charts detail-oriented, be so. Let people know who you really are and then the right customers and clients will LOVE YOU because you are just what they want. And you’ll be much happier, too!

Thanks To: Meggin McIntosh of Emphasis on Excellence, Inc.

30. No-One Likes Losers!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Act like a success – keep doing training, marketing and community outreach. Customers want to do businesses who they can trust are going to be around for the long term.

Thanks To: David Couper of Transitions Coaching

31. Give To Get!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Focus on Helping, Not Selling (Give to Get)rnYou shouldn’t be wasting time on trying to force people into purchasing your products or service. You should find people who want your product or service (qualifying) and then focus on offering them any and all helpful information that assists them in making an educated & informed decision. The SALE will take care of itself once you differentiate yourself from your competitors. There is an old saying, “You Can Get Everything You Want By Helping People Get What They Want.” To do this, just listen carefully to what your current customers are saying.

Thanks To: Traci Pena of Reincarnation

32. Let Marketing Pay For It Self!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Create opportunities for customers to be apart of your business growth and use video testimonials. Let your customers tell the world why your better than the competition. I offered the parents of youth, who attended my summer basketball camps and basketball training programs a discount if they would stay at camp one full day, to watch our program and to support their child. The deal, also required that each parent give a 30 second video testimonial about their true honest opinion about our program. The response was crazy! I made a direct connection to the customers who have the buying power in my industry “Parents”.

Thanks To: James Taylor of Taylored Athletes, Inc.

33. Be Exceptional

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Being a “me too” brand is unacceptable! Remember that people buy “experiences.” Make EVERY experience EXCEPTIONAL. Never say, “we have great customer service,” or “our prices are the best.” You damn well better have great customer service. And if you truly provide value and EXCEPTIONAL experiences, who cares about price?

EXCEPTIONAL experiences don’t have to break the bank in terms of advertising either. In fact, if you don’t provide EXCEPTIONAL experiences, you’ll likely be wasting a vast amount of money advertising. Why you ask? Because the experience may not fulfill the promise or you’ll lose the customer to the next new thing or better price that comes along.

Never just be OK. Be EXCEPTIONAL. You’ll stand out in everything you do.

Thanks To: Troy Scheer of TRANCE Marketing Group

34. Wow Your Customer!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Use every opportunity to “WOW” your customer. Give something away for free. Over deliver. Follow up sales with a “Are you happy?” phone call. Always exceed your customers’ expectations. This may not be easy but it works!

Make sure your customers leave you smiling!

Thanks To: Karin Wilson Edmonds of KW+A

35. Stand Up; Stand In; Stand Out

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: No one wins every time. If I’ve submitted a proposal that is not accepted, I still make an effort to win the account. I stand up for myself by making one last gesture: I assure the client that–should the selected speaker have an emergency–I would be available to stand in for
him or her. This professional offer helps me stand out from the competition and has landed me more than one opportunity, circuitously.

Thanks To: Marlene Caroselli of Principled Persuasion

36. Be Outrageous

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Know your target audience and what they’ll tolerate, then push them to it! Be careful to not offend or alienate, but push the boundaries enough to give pause. Branding and marketing efforts that make me stop, raise my eyebrows, then think, “Wow, that’s gutsy!” keep that company in the forefront of my mind. Who would think to brand themselves as the “Toilet Paper Entrepreneur” for example? Brilliant!

Thanks To: Amber Dennett of Divas Doing Business

37. Write A Book And Be The Trusted Expert

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: A book, booklet, or pamphlet doesn’t have to be long. Even a 2-page e-book that advises customers on money-saving tips for shopping with you…the 10 most common mistakes…10 most frequently asked questions… will portray you as a trusted adviser.

Thanks To: Claudia Gere of Helping Smart People Become Outstanding Authors

38. Stand Out In A Crowded Market – Using Contests To Grow Your Market Quickly

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Create a contest. For example, if you are a restaurant you could have a contest for “Customer (or Client) of the Month) with the winner being a customer with a great attitude and story. This will attract healthy competition and other similar customers. You can try this for any other type of business. Engage your employees in this and reward them with a $20 gift card of some sort if they are the one who submitted the story. Showcase the winners in your blog, on social networking sites and your place of business. Everyone likes a contest and the fact that there will be another contest the next month keeps the excitement alive for those who did not win the first time. In my twenty years in business we have never seen anything as successful as a contest to drive new business opportunities to one’s doorstep.

Thanks To: Melissa Giovagnoli of Networlding

39. Be More Original

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Yes that’s right you got to be more original to get to your target group whether it is a small one or a big one.Replication does works but it should also have a taste of some sort of innovation.
As millions selling the same product or service what the customer wants to see is a bit different but still general stuff.
The best example which you might have seen is of Bing Microsoft’s new search engine they have done the same thing as Google but in a damn different manner.

So think of innovation differently….

Thanks To: Akash Sharma of Revenue Strategy Solutions Ltd.

40. Be Excellent And Be The Customer!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Here is my tip “Be the client” It is not enough to offer a great service you have to anticipate their needs and desires. I do this by taking away any commitment. I own 2 fitness studios with no membership, time commitment , etc. So clients only come if we are excellent, our only job then is to be excellent and allow the clients to sell it for us. New studio just broke even in month 6.rn

Thanks To: Helena Collins of Life in Synergy, Inc.

41. It’s All About You!!!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Bring your personality back…now more than ever people do business with those they like & trust. The easiest & fastest way to acquire that is by being authentic. Your marketing materials should express your unique essence. Whenever you do promotions find ways to share your life with your customers so they feel like they know you. When you are your authentic self, there’s no competition!

Thanks To: Ungenita Prevost of Ungenita Beauty

42. Surprise Them

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: I truly care about the people I work with and they know it. I send small gifts -latest was a gratitude stone. I run contests -”No Complaints Throwdown” was the most recent and included engraved silicone bracelets that I mailed to everyone who wanted to play. No complaints for 21 days -if you complain, move the bracelet to your other wrist and start again at Day 1!

Thanks To: Ann Ronan of Authentic Life Institute

43. Be The Brand, And You Will Stand Out In The Crowd

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: As a new entrepreneur, you wear a million hats. The most important hat should be the “brand”. You are one with your brand. People buy things from people they like and trust. Be proud of your product and service and make sure when someone thinks of your product or service, they see you! Be different – stand in front of your business not behind it!

Thanks To: Janet Powers of Diva Toolbox, LLC

44. When Will You Learn?

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Want to standout from the competition? Then learn the answer to the following questions.

Do you know the hobbies of your best clients and customers?
Do you know their children’s hobbies – or even their names?
Do you have all the family’s birthdays in a database so you can send cards or, better yet, a personal note?
What do they do for vacations?
What’s their favorite type of food?
Where do they shop, play, and go out to eat?
What sports’ teams do they follow or don’t they care?
Did you send them a postcard the last time you were on vacation?
What’s their favorite car? Why?
What kind of books do they read?
What’s their favorite TV show?
Do they like to travel?
What countries have they visited?
Golf, tennis or ping pong.
Poker or bridge?

Thanks To: Bob Poole of The Poole Consulting Group

45. The 4th Dimension

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Distinguish your company by making a difference in your community — through scholarship support of your employees’ children, providing internships at your company, community outreach with educational support, a student competition event with awards, and/or community green initiatives. Remember, the context for these is your business sector. Your company will be known for integrity, commitment and quality, and receive free press.

Thanks To: Marshal Backlar of Backlar Consultants

46. Get To Know Me! Yeah, That’s The Ticket!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: My tip would be that if you are using any of the social media for your company, make sure you understand the rules of engagement. Potential customers are using this technology too and nothing is more off putting (to me at least) than to receive solicitation via Email, Direct Message or Facebook Message. If you want to message someone using this technology, do it as a human being, not as an “announcement” of your company service or promo code.

Thanks To: Devra Renner of Parentopia Consultation and Training Services

47. Your Message Will Thunder!!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: This is for the small business owner that advertises with any kind of audio. To STAND OUT…
1. Use a different voice on your commercial (yes out-source for a voice)…do not use the local radio guy because he’s a thousand other commercials.
2. Use a professional voice over on any video, presentation or website you may have. You may be good at what you do. Do what your best at and let the voice professional do what he’s good at.

Thanks To: Bryan Cox of Cox Marketing

48. Ask Your Customer

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Always ask your target consumer what they want / need BEFORE development begins. Find their pain points and figure out a way to solve them. Just
because you’d want to use the product, doesn’t mean that anyone else does.
Being an entrepreneur is great, until you realize that no one wants the multimillion dollar XYZ platform you developed.

Thanks To: Ross Felix of The Dating Revolution

49. Be The Brand

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Be the “brandividual” for your company instead of hiding behind the scenes of the “corporation”. Trying to look like a “big company” on the Web is so 1995.

Thanks To: Scot McKay of X & Y Communications

50. Be Remarkable First, And Then They Will Come

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: By now you know, you need to be remarkable. But what’s important to understand is that once you have found something truly remarkable, it doesn’t matter what resources you have, people will come to work with you and talk about your project.

Thanks To: Brandon Mendelson of Earth’s Temporary Solution

51. Selling As Spiritual Service

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: When appropriate, add a spiritual or consciousness element to your marketing.
This sets you apart as a soul-based, deeply caring and trustworthy business.
Judith Sherven, PhD and Jim Sniechowski, PhD
Authors of #1 bestselling
The Heart of Marketing: Love Your Customers and They Will Love You Back.

Thanks To: Judith Sherven of Soft Sell Marketing

52. Impressive Guarantee

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Make strong, competitive guarantees for your product or service that your competition doesn’t.

Thanks To: Shari’ Alexander of Presenting Matters, LLC

53. Given’ Some Savvy Sweets

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: On many occasions I give away small jars of homemade strawberry preserves made with berries from my parent’s garden. They’re unique and unexpected not to mention really good. The best part is the jelly is an extension of my brand.

Thanks To: Tara Wilson of Tara Wilson Events

54. Partnership Power

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: As a startup, a great way to “stand out from the crowd” is to offer free or discounted products and/or services to a few large companies in order to partner with them. This way, you have a great pool of people to give feedback on your service, and you’ve got some high-powered partners right out of the gate.

Thanks To: Carol Martell of RealUp

55. Humor

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: I used “size does matter!” with photo of a block-long building I had just sold;
“need more space?” with an image of crowded animals on Noah’s Ark; and
“ready for a new building?” with image of Tower of Pisa to highlight my creative talents as a commercial real estate broker. Used printed postcards for mailings of all 3 images.

Thanks To: Roberta Kuehl of neurological surgery, p.c.

56. Turn Your Know Into A Show

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: When you go to a play or see a movie it’s lights, camera and action. Start teaching others so they will see a light that will create a picture in their mind that it’s time for some action.

Thanks To: Derrick Hayes of WOE Enterprises

57. Free Giveaways: The Profit Potential Potient

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: As a serial entrepreneur and one who teaches at universities, the STANDOUT strategy I have seen work the best is make full use of the word “FREE”. If customer service and on time delivery are equal, an entrepreneur must do one think to shine above the rest of the pack. Offering freebies in an email, package sent, or on a membership site goes pretty far to develop a sense of value in product offerings, increase the amount of customers who know, like, and trust the entrepreneur, and is a tremendous way to build a sense of community within the business.

Thanks To: Dr. Dave Hale of The Internet Marketing Professor

58. How To Make Money By Not Selling

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: People don’t buy products, they buy Relationships! What goes around comes around so hold your horses.
Don’t try to sell your services, products or or yourself while networking. Not the first time, second time or even third time you interact with someone. Crazy Huh? How are you supposed to make money? What you offer instead is the Opportunity to build rapport and a ‘genuine’ relationship. Offer to listen to your new friend, offer to help them build their business, offer your network to them, and be real and be honest. Your reputation will grow substantially as someone who EVERYONE will want to know and do business with.

Thanks To: Frankie Picasso of Institute for Quantum Living and Conscious Design

59. I Thought Everyone Knew That!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Stand out from the others and become THE expert in your business/industry by sharing your knowledge through writing: blogs, articles, eBooks. People often take for granted their own specialized knowledge about their fields. Any time you find yourself thinking, “I thought everybody knew that,” about some aspect of your business or industry, it’s a perfect opportunity to capitalize on your knowledge by writing about it.

Thanks To: Laura Orsini of Write | Market | Design

60. Find The Angle!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: There’s always an angle, you just have to find it. For instance, to stand out from other comedians while touring to get work, I put keychains w/my biz card in them on every comedy condo key. Now the club booker/owner, had my name in front of them all the time when they took and gave the condo keys to every comedian each week. No one else did that and it got me a ton of work; kept my brand in their face all the time in a non-intrusive way. Find the angle!

Thanks To: Ian Coburn of Best Possible Choice

61. Make Your Mom Proud: The Handwritten Thank You Note

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: I’m a true believer in the power of the handwritten follow-up note. This simple gesture is unbelievably powerful, because it seems no one else takes the time — and they stand out more than ever in the email age. I’ve walked into clients’ offices and found years-old notes I’ve sent still proudly pinned up on their bulletin boards.

Lately, I find myself secretly hoping that the rest of the world remains rude because it helps me stand out even more!

Thanks To: Lisa Fahoury of Fahoury Ink

62. Have Your Own Voice Plus Learning

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: You can’t just do what everyone else does and do it cheaper. You must have a unique point of view. Develop tools, services and products that build on this point of view. People want a special experience when they buy something. Give them that special experience by having a unique point of view. Then, your goal needs to be to keep improving and learning so that you can achieve customer delight 100% of the time.

Thanks To: Lawrence Polsky of PeopleNRG, Inc.

63. Sometimes, More Is More.

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: Sometimes, more is more. You have to think differently from the ‘different’ of the good economic times.

Just as department store merchandisers do, you have to reposition or re-describe your business, goods or services. Merchandisers move store displays from one place to the other, because people don’t notice the displays after a while. Moving the displays creates something visually different and the consumer notices the change in the visual landscape.

You need to identify markets within your markets and focus your e-mails, your advertising, your press releases to those smaller groups.

64. Be A Celebrity Standout

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: We entered a category that was already full of so many different types of rubber ducks. We went a different route and pioneered a whole new concept of celebrity rubber ducks which were voted one of the top 100 gifts by Entertainment Weekly and have appeared on every TV network in the US not to mention magazines and newspapers and television shows around the world.

67. Look The Part!

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: “Dress for success” is almost cliche, but it is surprising how often in our casual society business people don’t take the time to groom appropriately for the situation. I am a professional speaker. The first time I spoke at a convention a number of years ago, I was voted (by attendees) as the best presenter. The comment that I got the most often was along the lines of, “It was so nice to see a mom like me, who looked so professional.” I’m a much better speaker now than I was then, but I’m convinced that dressing the part of a presenter was a key to getting the next gig.

68. Guest, Not Customer

How To Stand Out From The Crowd: In my mind, I always think of each person that calls my office or walks through my door as a guest. (e.g. open the door for them and greet them)rn rnWith this mindset, each person gets treated like they have never been treated before in a business. In business (and in life) people don’t remember what you tell them, but they always remember how you made them feel.
