Have known GV for a while and no one has made fun of him more in the last 4 years than me-in a good way of course. Shopped at his store before it became WineLibrary and got to watch it grow-

Just knowing GV a touch believe me when I say he is not joking – he really didn’t do anything fun in his 20′s just work- I mean anyone from NJ who doesn’t know what “Jenks”, or “Bar A” is and never rode “The Sea Serpant” is a social dork- Amazing how he could be the king of Social Media. Listen the guy thinks a “dry town” is a town with now lake or river in it-

Anyway for real, Gary truly does care about his community and really works harder than anyone I know and deserves all the success he has attained-

Great interview! I like how he keeps it real with whatever he’s talking about too!

My favorite part was, “If you’ve never sold anything before you were 10 years old, then you’re not a salesman.” That’s classic! I’m glad I made it, I had my first sale at 6!

Great job interviewing too Mike! Keep up the good work!

Good stuff Mike! Makes me want to “Crush it” (and get a glass of wine)! :)

    • http://www.ToiletPaperEntrepreneur.com Mike Michalowicz

@Joyce Bone – Joyce!!!! Did you see that I highlighted your book on a prior episode of On A Roll (the one with Amilya, I believe). Definitely want to connect with you…

I disagree with what Gary said about not being a salesman if you didn’t sell anything before the age of 10, but otherwise a stellar interview! Thanks brotha Mike!

“Being a money making machine is cool.”

So many gems of business wisdom here.

A MUST-SEE video for all business owners.

    Thanks Mike and Gary!

    • http://www.ToiletPaperEntrepreneur.com Mike Michalowicz

@Walt – I loved it when he said a “”money making machine.” He is so talented at saying what sits in all (or many) of our minds.

  • http://bubbalon.com/ Alex

Awesome!! Mobile apps + community + care = future BIG trends. What was the deal with the b/w frame? Just random creativity? “Put every penny back in the business” and “no Jezey shore for 8 years” — yeah! Now we have the secret recipe of success. DNA is more difficult to tap into though.

  • Chad

    Another great video Mike!

Many gems in there…I especially like the 2, no wait, 4 C’s.

The only thing I DONT agree with is that success or sales is in your DNA. The vast majority of components that one acquires to become successful are skills, which can be learned. Perhaps he learned those skills at an early age, which helped him make $50k as a teenager! Now THATS the 5th “C” – Cash!

Great overall message about sacrifice. Even if it was only the Jersey shore…

  • Euveshan

    Great stuff here..

What a great interview. The best part about this video is that both of you are authentic. I have been on the sidelines for way too long.

  • http://www.book-lab.com AJ

Fantastic video. Loved it. It’s funny, I never think of myself as a sales-type person, but I did have a rock stand when I was seven. (Lemonade seemed so much more complicated.) I also organized my friends in third grade to help me make art, and then I set up a table and sold it. Called it “Craft Kids.” So this video got me thinking about natural abilities/interests I forgot I had. Hmmm…

    • http://www.ToiletPaperEntrepreneur.com Mike Michalowicz

@AJ – Holy crap AJ… you sold rocks too??? I made rock people. It was a rock, an acorn head stick arms and legs, and leaves for clothing. Splatter on tons of Elmer’s glue and whammo, a rock guy. Could easy net 20 cents.

  • http://www.CleanCandlesTV.com Kari Andersen

Mike! That was seriously awesome! Such great information and valuable business advice! Loved IT!!

  • http://ryanesaki.com Ryan

Mike! Great interview! You watch a lot of the interviews Gary does and they all typically tend to ask him the same kind of stuff and draw out the same kind of answers. Your interview actually pulled out stuff I didn’t hear before.

  • http://www.hware.com Brenda Horton

What most successful business owners fail to emphasize is what GV said so eloquently….It’s not about the the amount of sales/revenue, it’s about how profitable a business is. PERIOD! You can have a business doing a billion dollars in sales, but if you are not making a profit, then a business cannot survive.

    • http://www.ToiletPaperEntrepreneur.com Mike Michalowicz

@Brenda – Couldn’t agree more. I myself was on the chest thumping path of the size of the top line with my first business. I was so hyped to have a big top number that, even if I had a losing quarter (profit wise), I was still deeming it a success. Can’t grow profit by simply doing more of a losing proposition. But my ego was in the way. Finally it caught up with me and I had to take drastic measures (terminations, cuts, renegotiate fees, etc.) to get the bottom line growing.

I believe I have learned my lesson permanently and now brag (to myself) about the bottom line. A small business with a really healthy cash flow and bottom line… is a beautiful thing.

      @Dave – Ha! In regards to your P.S. I did. I did.

Re: “If you didn’t sell anything by the time you were 10-years-old, you’re not a sales-person.” — Gary V.

Interesting. I sold Beanie Babies and Pokemon cards back when there were a hot product. Remember those? A buddy of mine owned a shop. I worked at the shop after school and on weekends I ran the booth at various trade-shows. Beanie Babies were selling like CRAZY! The LA Fair was always a big event for us then. Ahh…memories…
